Spring Makeup Trends

Pink Pop

A pop of color is a must-have for this spring season. It’s a fun way to add something that is out of your comfort zone, without being too committed to your statement look.  Add a soft wash of a bright spring shade (I’d recommend a lavender, yellow or pink shade) into the inner corner, if you are down for a bolder look, or the outer ‘V’ for a more natural one. Keep the rest of your makeup clean and minimal with a natural flush on the cheeks and lips.

Light Lashes

Use a quick coat of a colored mascara to update your standard lash routine. A stunning blue, copper or emerald will make your lashes stand out and complement any eye color. There are a few green and clean brands that have some tinted hues on the market, including Well People, Ilia and Zuii Organics. Adding a layer of white lash primer will give your color an extra boost.

Mistical

Now that the harsh winter weather is finally subsiding, its time to freshen up that weather-worn skin. Add a dewy mist to top off your makeup, or a bare face for a gentle glow. I am trying out the Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist ($$$) and have my eyes on the Caudalie Grape Water and Bioessence Squaline+Micronutrient Fine Mist sprays as well. In a pinch or if you have super sensitive skin, Rose water is a makeup bag staple.

Glow Up

Adding a soft, golden highlight to any makeup look is my go-to for spring and summer weather. I adore the Tart Amazonian Clay Highlight in Exposed for a full makeup look and the Ilia Multi- stick fin Cosmic Dancer for an everyday gentle glow. The Rose Gold stick from Au Natural would be stunning on any darker skin tone.

Fall Florals

Floral print has classically been a soft and romantic print that evokes the most delicate of emotions. This season they are taking a new lease on life and a darker, moodier spin.

floral, style, ootd, spring

In the past, dainty, feminine florals never caused much of a stir for me in the prints department, but black-backed florals have quickly become a go-to print for my summer transitional wardrobe. I can’t keep myself from adding a new piece to my collection every time that I go out. It may have become a problem.

fall, style, fashion, lookbook

The trick to taking floral into 2018 is adding them in an unexpected way. One look that I’ve been living for is the play-set-dress combo. It is such a fun and fresh take on a romper or summer dress. I love a long-sleeve top to keep the sun off your shoulders, but a peek of leg keeps things just a little sexy.

hippie, chic,style fall, floral

I paired this look with a staple piece of my wardrobe: a black, felt hat and a draping, silver bolo-style necklace from Cloe and Isabel. The lace paneling on the sleeves are the perfect feminine accent to contrast vegan leather western boots with a silver buckle detail. For a girl who usually wears black on black, this floral infusion is a fresh take on the dark monochrome look.

6 Steps To Conquer Depression

As someone who has dealt with depression and anxiety for many years, I have gained some insight into dealing with your feelings in a healthy way. It can be so easy to let depression “win” and give in to those feelings of isolation and numbness. Pushing yourself out of that cycle is not only imperative, it is also a challenge that is not easily combated.  I have learned some things along the way that may bring insight to anyone who has struggled with depression.

depression, lifestyle ,self help

It is more than a simple “bad day,” so it requires more effort to overcome.

Here are some simple tips to help get you back on track to conquer the day in your favor.

1 | Practice Gratitude

It isn’t the easiest thing to put into practice, especially during down times, but for me, practicing a guided meditation before bed helps calm the mind and put life into perspective. Meditate on one thing that happened in your life today that you are grateful for.

2 | Spend Some “Me” Time

Quite possibly the hardest thing to do is get out of your scrubs and sweat pants and put some effort into yourself. I don’t think “fake it till you make it” means putting on a total mask of makeup and faking a crazy “Crest white smile,” but instead–slipping on a cute and comfy top, taking a warm shower with a lovely smelling body wash with enlivening essential oils, and putting on a refreshing face mask like my all time favorite, by 100 % Pure and face the day with a new mindset.

3 | Feed Your Body

Chunky monkey may seem like your best friend, but it isn’t doing your body any good to live off the stuff. Make it a priority to fuel your body with the necessary nutrients to function at a basic level. I recommend making a green smoothie in times when you are especially not motivated. It is a quick and easy way to get in those good-for-you ingredients that will help nourish your body and mind. Below is one of my favorite recipes to stuff in those greens!

  1. Spinach – 1/2 cup
  2. Kale – 1/2 cup
  3. Peaches (frozen or jar) – 1/2  cup
  4. Hemp Hearts – 2 tbsp
  5. Sunflower seed or nut butter – 1 tbsp
  6. Plant milk (flaxseed is my favorite) – 1/2 cup

4 | Remember To Breathe

Take a few minutes before you leave the house, your bed, etc., to take some breaths. Inhale and hold it for 4 seconds, then exhale and imagine all the negative, cloudy feelings and emotions exiting your body. Just getting some good ol’ oxygen into your system can help you refresh your focus for the day to come.

depression, self-help, lifestyle

5 | Remember

Know that you are more than your depression. You are a living, breathing gift to the world, and nothing should have the power to stop you from sharing yourself with it–not even your own self.  Remember that who you are is so much more than any feeling in any moment. You do not have to let depression “win,” you have the power to take your own life back, one day at a time.

6 | Accept Help

Always seek help if you need it, from professionals who can give you counseling and medication to friends who will be there for you when you want to withdraw from the world, entirely. Depression can be extremely isolating, so just knowing that you can break that barrier by asking for what you need is a step towards healing.

Monthly Favorites-May

Here is a little inspiration for all things spring; my May Favorites list is composed of items that may have changed the course of my life forever!

1 | Lippy Love

floral, makeup, lifestyle, green tea, too faced, matte

Liquid lipstick. I may have jumped on the train a little later than most girls, but once I did I was “full-speed-ahead” in love! I have been on the quest for the perfect liquid lipstick that doesn’t make my dry skin look like death warmed over and deep fried, and at last I may have found my holy grail!

The formula is creamy, but dries fairly matte. The staying power is incredible. I usually get an hour or two of wear out of any lip product (apparently I press my lips together a lot), but this has stayed glued on with minimal fading, even with drinking, for at least 5 or 6 hours!

When it comes to beauty products, there are two main boxes that must be checked. First, it has to be cruelty-free! I don’t believe it is necessary to test on animals, especially for cosmetics use, so why would I support a brand that does? Secondly, I try to use products that are as natural as possible, however, “as possible” is a tricky thing. With some products, I am willing to lean slightly away from “100% organic and healthy ingredients,” if it is absolutely paramount for the product to function. I wholeheartedly hope that someday science will not make us choose between chemicals and functionality…but that is often the reality we face as consumers in this day and age.

Will all that being said, the Too Faced Melted Matte lipstick was introduced to me by makeup queen @harayaba (seriously go follow her!) when getting ready for a photo-shoot. I was instantly hooked! My go-to nude shade right now is “cool-girl,” but I am very tempted to purchase the entire collection.

2 | Drink Up
lifestyle, green tea, matcha, workflow

Matcha. This green tea drink has been around for a while, but as an avid coffee drinker, I felt no need to participate in its green glory. Boy was I wrong! It has quickly become an obsession (thank’s Starbucks 🙁 ) and has me on the hunt for the perfect at-home latte mix. I enjoy mine with dairy-free soy-milk on ice for the perfect spring pick me up!

3 | Floral Fever
style, floral, matcha, green tea, liquid lipstick, makeup, lifestyle

I will be doing a style post on the subject soon, but I am so in love that it couldn’t not make my top favorite for the month. My passion for all things floral print escalated quickly from one piece to oh so many (you guys, I may have a real problem), but it just seemed to be exactly what my mostly black wardrobe needed for a spring flare. It is feminine without being too “girly” for a pair of black lace-up booties and a studded bag. It is the perfect timeless trend to take your wardrobe from spring to summer!

Easy Vegan French Toast

Nothing quite makes your Sunday sparkle like a little champagne brunch. While I may enjoy a glass of libation or two, brunch just isn’t brunch without a towering plate of french toast.

vegan, plant-based, french toast, brunch, breakfast, food, eats

IMG_1666

I created a quick and easy recipe that everyone can enjoy together. Vegan, dairy-free and easily made gluten-free.

vegan, plant-based, french toast, brunch, breakfast, food, eats

1/2-1 cup Plant Milk (my favorite are vanilla flax or soymilk)

1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

1 tsp mixed spices (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg)

1 Tbsp Energy Egg Replacement Powder (approximately 1 egg worth mixed separately)

1 Tbsp chai tea mix (optional for extra flavor)

Bread (4 slices.  The “staler” the better)

Top with your favorite fruits, nut-butters and maple syrup

IMG_1478

IMG_1469

Just dip your toast into the liquid mixture for a few seconds each side and place in an oiled, heated pan on medium heat. Turn once crispy and top with your favorite fruits, nut-butters and maple syrup.

Let cool, eat and enjoy 🙂

Real Talk – What’s wrong with being confident?

To quote singer, Demi Lovato, “So what’s wrong with being confident?”

Why is confidence such a seemingly unobtainable goal in our everyday lives?

It has been conditioned in us, from a very young age as women, to hate ourselves….and if not ourselves, at least our bodies. It may stem from how your mother picked at herself in critical ways, or a classmate teasing you about an insecurity, or even having an unhealthy relationship with comparison of others.

self love, confidence, real talk

We could blame it on the media (which has its fair share of negative influences) and ban all magazines and photo-spreads, shut down our Instagram, and block out the world as being “toxic.” I believe that a better route is to lead by example in changing the way that society views women and pass that along to our children and those we come in contact with. Good things can spread as well as negative. I call for us to stand up in a movement of positivity towards all women, and that journey begins with ourselves.

self love, confidence, real talk

Something that  changed my life forever is writing the words “you are beautiful” as the screen saver on my phone. Every day to unlock my messages, I would have to swipe past those three important words and repeat them to myself (whether I felt that way or not). Just the simple act of setting intention to love yourself every day can make all the difference in the world. You may have to “fake it till you make it,” but eventually you will create new pathways in your brain that have you believing in yourself as a worthy person of beauty.

You are beautiful

I challenge you to tell yourself, one time, every day, how beautiful you are. It may be in a little note to yourself, a glance in the mirror, or a silent chant in your head during spin class. Makeup or no makeup, bad hair day or not, stare your demons right in the face and tell them that you are confident and I believe you will learn to live that confidence.

real talk, self love, confidence

Beauty is not in the eye of the beholder, but in those who believe in its power.

Take control of your own self-confidence and let your inner beauty shine out!

confidence, real talk, self love

10-Minute Spring Makeup Tutorial

too faced makeup look-1002

During the change of season from winter to spring, I’ve been wanting to infuse some color into my makeup look. But, with dry winter skin, I want to go as minimal as possible with just a hint of fun to it.

makeup, vegan, cruelty-free
This “10 minute” look will get you out the door quickly in the morning with a hint of spring color and enough neutral tones that it can pair with any outfit. I also only use cruelty-free products and vegan, when possible (I will make another post on this topic in the future!).

I always start out with freshly washed and moisturized skin and then apply concealer in a triangle shape underneath my eyes. My go-to concealer for quick makeup application is the Illusionist in shade 010 by Vapour.  It comes in a metal tube for easy, on-the-go application.

makeup, vegan, organic

Next step is the eyes; the secret to this look is so simple and one of the star products, in my opinion, from the brand E.L.F.  I used the Smudge Pot, in the shade “Wine Not,” and lightly tapped the cream onto my eyelids and “smoked” it out slightly with my fingertips. It is a slightly shimmery cream eye-shadow that glides on a nice light wash of color and is surprisingly affordable at $3.00 a pot (I’ll take one in every color, please!).

makeup, vegan, organic, green

green, cruelty-free, makeup

With this look, a coat of mulled berry toned mascara is the light touch of color that I was looking for. The 100% Pure Maracuja Mascara has a soft blackberry/plum color with a gentle formula which separates the lashes nicely for a causal look. It is packaged in a nice, silver tube and it smells amazing!

vegan, 100%pure, cruelty-free

100% pure, vegan, green beauty

Next, I just run some light reflecting powder eye-shadow along the brow bone and inner eye corner. I used the Physician’s Formula “Natural Nude” palette.

too faced makeup look-1011

It’s time for cheeks! A very light contour with my Lily-Lolo “Contour Duo” blended with a small fluffy brush and then it’s blush time.

Lily-Lolo, makeup, vegan

My new blush obsession is the product of collaboration of Aspyn Ovard and Pixi by Petra. When she promo’d the product on her YouTube channel, I knew I needed to have it (she being about as fair-skinned as I am). This blush blew me out of the water! I got the shade “Rome Rose” and it is a highly pigmented, sparkling rose gold-pink. I never wear sparkle, but this is subtle enough for daytime looks with a natural flush of color. Plus, the bright lime and gold packaging is adorable and the formula is perfect for my Lily Lolo Blush Brush!

Next up is brows.  I do a simple sweep of brown with the E.L.F eyebrow powder set in “Medium” and smooth them out with an old mascara spoolie.

Finally, the Piece De Resistance of this look: Liquid Lipstick. I may have a slight (ok, not so slight) addiction to finding the perfect liquid lipstick and this one comes pretty darn close!

Too Faced, liquid lipstick,cruelty-free ,

I used the Melted Matte by Too Faced in the shade “Cool Girl” and a lip liner by Afterglow Cosmetics. This is almost the perfect nude lip, in my opinion; not too peachy with a subtle hint of rose pink tones.

Afterglow Cosmetics, makeup, Vegan

Just line the outer part of the lip line (I promise it won’t look strait out of the 90’s) and fill it in with one coat of the liquid lipstick! That is all!

Too Faced, Makeup, cruelty-free

This completed look is “glam,” without being weighed down by a ton of foundation or heavy products, and can get you from fresh-faced to out-the-door in ten minutes!  Please be kind to animals when purchasing makeup (keep an eye out for a leaping bunny logo!).

Springtime never looked so good!

Start off the night before with a relaxing bath to open up your pores, maybe have a glass of wine or a calming cup of tea.

Valentine's Day, skincare, makeup, Green beauty

Before you slip into the tub, take a cleansing or pore-minimizing mask and tap in an upward motion onto your entire face or t-zone if you have sensitive skin.  This will not only help clean out your pores but also stimulate the blood flow for a natural flush.

rose, makeup , skincare, green beauty

Once your mask is cleaned off, it’s time to moisturize. This Heavenly Night Cream 1000 Roses by Andalou Natural’s has plant stem cells and hydraulic acid to achieve that stunning glow in your sleep. Not to mention it has the most romantic name ever!

rose, natural, skincare, green beauty

Nothing says “treat” to me like bathing in my favorite scent.  I always use a spritz of rose water to lock in the moisture and add to the aromatherapy aspect of the evening.

Natural, skincare, makeup, green beauty

Time to top off the pout with a lip mask. One of my favorites is the Tarte Lip Exfoliant, but for a DIY version, check out my recipe post!

For a little touch of rosy color with all the goodness of a lip balm, I swipe on the Nudist Colour Balm in shade number 8 by Well People.

For the final touch don’t forget your nails. Since they are softened from the soak in the tub it’s time to manicure those hands.

skincare, Valentine's Day, natural, green beauty

Buff them into your desired shape with a nail file and top with a classy rose gold nail polish. Terra-Coppa by Sally Hansen is my go to polish for an all night wear.

Now let all those good for you ingredients sink into your skin over night and wake up refreshed and ready to crush your Valentine’s Day!

Brand Spotlight- Lily Lolo

brand spotlightlily Lolo

Let’s talk makeup.

I have always been attracted to wearing makeup; it is such a fun way to express your personality and the mood you want to emote to the world. Since my early teens, makeup has been a daily part of my morning ritual, but as a conscious consumer, what I have in my makeup bag has drastically changed since the days of wearing the infamous little pink tube of mascara.

vegan, makeup , green beauty

Non-toxic, cruelty-free and vegan beauty products have changed my life, and my skin (but that is a story for another day). Today, I wanted to shine the light on a clean beauty brand that I have tested out, to save you from the hassle and expenses of trying a new product without any real review to help you make an informed decision.

Lily Lolo Mineral cosmetics is a London based company that specializes in mineral-based cosmetics. They are a cruelty-free company and are Leaping Bunny Certified. I have yet to try all the products from their line, but I will review for you the ones that I have gotten my hands on.

vegan, makeup, green beauty

My first overall reaction to the brand is positive. They have chic black and white packaging and one of the most notable features they have is mirrored tops to their compacts (which is surprisingly uncommon in the green beauty community). They also have a number of pressed powders, which I find extremely convenient.

vega, makeup , green beauty

vegan, makeup, green beauty

The first product that I ordered was the Sculpt and Glow Contour Duo ($26). I was soooo ecstatic to find a pressed-powder highlighter and bronzer in travel-ready packaging, but sadly, it didn’t live up to my expectations. The packaging is great; it comes with a mirrored top and two pressed-powders. The thing that I was the most disappointed by was the more ashy-tone to the otherwise warm looking palette. The highlight color is a matte cream shade for a subtle look.

Brand Spotlight- Lily Lolo-1015

The contour shade looks like a warm, chocolate brown, but came across really ashy on my pale skin. I think, for someone with a more tan complexion, this would be a winner of a product, but unfortunately, even though I liked the consistency of the pressed powders, the color was not flattering on my skin tone.

vegan, makeup, green beauty

The next item that I was very excited to get my hands on was their Eyebrow Duo ($15). I ordered it in the shade Medium. This one comes with a creamy wax and a matte brown powder. I have used this product much more, since it is a great on-the-go brow kit.

Brand Spotlight- Lily Lolo-1017

The problem that I had with this product was the same as with the contour color.  The brown just came across muddy and ashy on my skin tone. Between the Lily Lolo eyebrow kit and my trusty E.L.F eyebrow kit, I’d rather save a few dollars and go with the latter.

vegan, makeup, green beauty

The third item I ordered , was actually a mistake. I had planned on purchasing the mascara, but accidentally ordered the Natural Eye Pencil in Black.

vegan, makeup, green beauty

This was a pleasant surprise. It is a creamy formula in a true black wooden pencil and it comes with a sturdy plastic cap. It can create a thick or thin line with ease and is so much more convenient for traveling than my everyday powdered mineral eyeliner.

vegan, makeup, green beauty

The next two items are from their vegan brush line. I ordered their Blush Brush ($21), which is a super soft-angled brush. I honestly prefer brushes with shorter handles than the Lily Lolo brushes, but they have soft and easy to clean bristles.

vegan, makeup, green beauty

The other brush I picked up was the Angled Brow Spoolie ($11), which has a thick spoolie end and an angled brush tip on the other end. The spoolie is great, but the brow end is too thick for my taste and doesn’t stand up to the brush’s price point.

Brand Spotlight- Lily Lolo-1016

Brand Spotlight- Lily Lolo-1004

Overall, as a brand, I would rate it 3 1/2 stars out of 5. I love the branding, packaging and travel-ready nature of the line. The flaws for me were mainly the color selection and formulation being unflattering on my light skin tone.

Have you tried Lily Lolo? If so, what are your favorite products from the line that I’ve got to try?
